I often get asked this question and I don’t think there is a right and wrong answer. It all comes down to personal preference. How do you want to feel when you enter that room? What kind of atmosphere do you want to create?
Once you have those questions answered, then how many cushions on a sofa will just flow. So depending on the atmosphere you would like to create, are are some suggestions for a 2-3 seater sofa.
To create the relaxed and playful atmosphere, I recommend styling with odd numbers of sofa cushions e.g. 3, 5 and 7 (for larger or L shape lounge). Having a cushion combo with different sizes and textures will create a homely and welcoming look. For example, you can have two large square sofa cushions (60x60cm) at the back and then layer it with two medium square sofa cushions (45x45cm) and add a small rectangle sofa cushion (30x50cm) at the front. To add texture, you can also use a throw.
For a formal look, style cushions with symmetry e.g. 2, 4 or 6 (for larger sofas) cushions. Keeping cushion shapes and sizes similar will give it a more formal look. Velvet cushions can also create a formal atmosphere. Sofa cushion styles are important when it comes to a formal look, as it ...
For a standard size sofa have no more than 2-3 cushions. Personally, I think the minimum number of cushions on a sofa should be three otherwise it looks cold and lonely. Perhaps, two on one end and one on the other or all three layered together. Keep the colours, patterns and texture to the minimum.
One to two cushions would be perfect! Can be one square (45x45cm or 60x60cm), a rectangle cushion (30x50cm) or a combination of both (larger square at the back and small rectangle at the front).
A relaxed and playful style would be a perfect way to style a daybed.
I would style the daybed with as many cushions as possible, using different sizes, shapes and texture. After all, it is a daybed, you would want it to be relaxed and fun, styled with comfy cushions for sofa so you can dive into it and hangout all day.
